TagAlong is a compact, offline-first personal safety keychain designed for women in low-income communities who often commute at irregular hours and may not have access to smartphones, reliable internet, or complex app-based safety tools. Inspired by fieldwork and self-defence workshops conducted with women across schools and NGOs in Mumbai, the device is built to be discreet, simple, and dependable under stress, when panic can make screens and apps unusable.
The keychain enables hands-free activation through voice keywords in Hindi and English, and uses GSM + GPS to send emergency alerts with live location to trusted contacts and authorities, even in low-signal areas. It also includes an integrated microphone that records time-stamped audio during activation, helping users preserve evidence for post-incident accountability—an important gap in existing low-cost safety tools.
TagAlong is built for scale through institutional and NGO partnerships, enabling bulk procurement for workplace safety, community safety, and CSR programs. With pilots already deployed through partner organizations, the project is now focused on strengthening reliability, improving activation accuracy and durability, and moving from a field-tested prototype to a widely distributed product that can make everyday travel safer for thousands of women across India.
